Question 2:
Dominican elites have developed a resentment against France even before the separation of the island in 1697. Why?
France was Spain enemy in Europe. Spain wanted to preserve Roman Catholicism and France was into enlightening and humanism. The line separating the island into two colonies was the result of one of the military confrontations between France and Spain.
Dominicans have also developed a hateful and xenophobic anti-haitianism based on a wrong reading of history.
1. Dominican elite’s argue that Dessalines killed hundreds of Dominicans in 1805.
2. They also believe that during the unification of the island by Jean Pierre Boyer, Haitians hurt Dominicans.
3. This elite was taught by the United States that they were superior to Haitians.
4. Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo transformed anti-haitianism into law. For generations, Dominicans were socialized into believing that Haitians were zombie makers, satanic, barbarians and that they wanted to make a reality the Haitian Constitution that says “The Island is one and indivisible.”
