Q.1) After listening to the finale of Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 (in full or in the lecture), reflect on your impressions of the piece. Do you find it to be triumphant? Is it something else? Is it some sort of combination? After you’ve reflected on the Shostakovich example, write about a piece of music that you think contains different expressive content with intelligent listening than it does on a surface-level examination. What are the different expressive elements that can be found, and how are they accomplished?

Q.2) As you have listened to the ‘classical’ music in this class, do you hear cultural differences in the actual sounds? For example, does the music of Aaron Copland sound ‘American’? Or does the music of Stravinsky sound ‘Russian’? Why? If you don’t hear those kinds of differences, why do you think that is? Are there examples that you can think of where you can hear these types of distinctions? Are there types of music that, without knowing anything about, you could identify as exemplifying a culture or place? Please elaborate on this idea.
