QUESTION 2
3 Scenarios: (worth 3.33 points each)
Activity: Using Conversation
For this assignment students are to take a position as a parent and teacher. Respond to all 3 scenarios as a parent andas a teacher.
Scenario 1:
Parent: You are a parent whose ?rst language is not English. You speak your own language at home to your child (though you do speak English) because you are trying to preserve your childs language heritage. You come to school and want your child to be taught in English though the child right now has only spoken your original language. What will be your approach with the teacher?
Teacher: You do not know this language the parent speaks at home with the child. How will you ful?ll the parents request?
Scenario 2:
Parents: Half the families in this school speak the same language (other than English). You parents band together and are requesting the teacher be bilingual and teach in both languages. As parents how would you approach the teacher.
Teacher: You are bilingual but feel these children should become more pro?cient in English. Have a discussion about how you could solve this issue.
Scenario 3:
Parents: You are the other half of the parents in Scenario #2. You do not want your children in a bilingual classroom and are prepared to go to the school board for a decision. You want the teacher, whom you know to be bilingual, to be instructed to only speak English in the classroom. As a parent how would you discuss with the teacher you only want Engilsh spoken in your classroom.
Teacher: While you believe English should be the main language of the classroom, you want the freedom to speak the second language to the other children to explain assignments and occasionally read stories and play games from that culture, in that language.
From a teacher’s perspective how would you discuss with these parents in your classroom environment you teach in both English and Spanish?
Purpose: To sensitize the students to some of the issues parents, schools, and teachers face in bilingual education
