Please do the following reading (linked above), and answer the questions below the pictures. Being specific is important in any kind of communication-writing, speaking. If you say “Christmas Tree” someone might wonder which kind-the first or the second? If you say you had a good time, does it mean that you enjoyed the company, the food, that you met someone who is going to give you a job, that you met the love of your life, that you danced like you’ve never danced, that you sat in the corner just how you like it, with nobody bothering you!
This will also depend on your audience and purpose. For example, if you are just telling a coworker about your Christmas, being general about the tree may be just fine. However, if you are writing an essay about your economically challenged Christmas, you would emphasize the type of tree. The same goes for a “good” time. If you are answering a neighbor, you will probably not want to get into the details, unless you’re buddies with the neighbor. However, if your sister, with whom you’re close, wants to know, you will probably get very specific. If you are writing about the “good time” you had at a restaurant for a restaurant review, you would probably emphasize the food and the ambiance. If you’re talking to your sister about the “good time” you had you might focus on your really neat date, or your best friends who were so good to hang with.
Please read the essay linked above, and take about a paragraph of “active reading” notes, discussed in previous lesson. Then, write a four-sentence summary of the essay. Also, answer the following questions in about four sentences each….
1. What can you take away from this to use in your writing?
2. How do you think this would apply to a research or academic essay?
