Description
In this assignment, students will demonstrate an understanding of important concepts in juvenile delinquency and juvenile justice. Students will also review and discuss concepts related to chronic offending, as well as patterns and trends in juvenile offending.
Instructions
- Review the Module 2 textbook readings (Chapters 1, 2, and 13).
- Review the Viewpoint reading at the end of Chapter 2 in your textbook. This Viewpoint case study is the foundation for the following elements of this writing assignment.
- Write a paper that conforms to the following content and organization requirements:1. Cover page in APA format2. Paragraph 1: History of Juvenile Justice
- Provide a brief review (no more than 8 sentences) in your own words of how societys views of juveniles have evolved to todays treatment of juveniles in our current juvenile justice system structure.
- Be sure to review how juvenile offenders are treated currently versus how they were treated in the past.
- Note: This paragraph will require you to summarize and paraphrase what you learned in the Module 2 textbook readings about the history of juvenile justice.

- 3. Paragraph 2: Differences and Examples
- In your own words, explain the difference between a juvenile delinquent, a status offender, and an adult criminal offender.
- Provide examples of the types of offenses each category would engage in.
- Briefly describe in your own words how each of the youth categories (juvenile delinquent and status offender) are treated in the juvenile justice system, based on the Chapter 1 readings.

- 4. Paragraph 3: Correlates of Delinquency
- Consider the correlates of delinquency discussed in the Module 2 readings.
- Identify and summarize two correlates of delinquency that are relevant to the Viewpoint reading.

- 5. Paragraph 4: Chronic Offenders
- In your own words, define the concept of the chronic offender.
- Consider the reading(s) on chronic offenders. Identify and discuss at least two causes of chronic offending that are discussed in the module readings and demonstrated in the Viewpoint reading.

- 6. Paragraphs 5-6: Policy Implications
- Consider the discussion of policy implications related to chronic offending issues in Chapters 1 and 2 of the textbook.
- Identify, research (using reliable, external (not your textbook) resources), and discuss one specific policy related to chronic offenders that could be useful in the case described in the Chapter 2 Viewpoint reading.
- Describe the policy, giving enough detail that your reader(s) understand the fundamental elements. Be sure to include how it is supposed to address issues related to chronic offending.
- Discuss how this policy would have been useful in the Chapter 2 Viewpoint case, providing facts and evidence from the case and textbook readings to support your discussion.
