Final Essay: Submit to Anthology as WE 4
Below is the prompt for the Final Essay (WE 4). It needs to be 3000 words and must follow APA
guidelines. For more help with the formatting, go to the Bethel Library site or the Online
Writing Lab at Purdue University (search for OWL).
What you need to do:
Pick an infectious disease that interests you. Look in Chapters 21-26 for ideas. You will need
to identify the cause of the disease, treatments, prevention, and make sure you know the
genus, species, and common names for the disease that you pick.
Below are the chapters in the Textbook that you should use and cite it. I point out the
highlights of each chapter that will help you.
? Chapter 1:Germ Theory of Disease, Pasteur’s work
? Chapter 4: Cell structure and function parts of cell that contribute to virulence, Cell wall
and LPS. If you choose a viral disease, this chapter does not really apply to you.
? Chapter 8: DNA and Plasmids
? Chapter 13: Viruses, their genomes, how they make copies of themselves, Entrance into
cells, special things about the virus
? Chapters 14 and 15: Toxins, Enzymes. other mechanisms, Chemical and Physical
Mechanisms of bacteria that contribute to virulence.
? Chapter 16: Innate Mechanisms of the Host Skin, Mucus Membranes, chemicals and
physical barriers that prevent infection
? Chapter 17: Immune system
? Other parts of text that pertains to disease that you have selected.
Essay must be doubled spaced using Calibri or Times New Roman Fonts, 11 or 12 size. The
essay needs to be 3000 words. Dont worry if you are a bit over or under on the word count.
