Essay Directions: Who Are You? (As a Writer)
Diagnostic Essay
2-3 pages, following APA format.
In this Diagnostic essay, you’ll explore your previous experiences as a writer. This essay also helps me understand how you read and process complex written directions, gives me a sense of what level the class is writing on, and to make sure you’re all placed in the correct writing class.
Overview: Yes, you are a writer, so it’s better if you just embrace that identity now. The definition of writer is “someone who writes” so you clearly qualify, even if you don’t plan on making your livelihood by writing.
But what kind of writer are you?
When do you write? How do you write? What are your attitudes about writing?
ProTip: You’ll notice that the work in the previous assignments and journals should have helped you prpeare to write this essay. That’s by design. But don’t think all the work is done! Use the work from the Explore and Practice folders to get started, but be prepared to dig even deeper as you write this essay.
Audience: You’re writing for someone who is curious to know about you and your experience as a writer: What you’ve done, how you feel, what you hope to do.
They know nothing about your your past experience writing but want to get an idea of what you’ve done and where you’re coming from.
