Egyptian Chronology: You do not need to memorize the dates but you do need to UNDERSTAND what transpired in the different eras.
Pre Dynastic: 5,000-3100 BC. Early sand burials and early mastabas. Narmer unified upper and lower Egypt.
Early Dynastic: 3100-2686 Memphis is established as capital of Lower Egypt.
Old Kingdom: Considered the first Golden Age of Egypt. Burials from the mastaba to the large pyramids of Egypt. Kings achieved absolute authority and divinity through the cult of Isis and Osirus. Massive spending for burials. Kafre, Kufu and Menkaure memorialized on Gizah. After 94 year reign of Pepi, power diminished. Art of king idealized to perfection standards.
First Intermediate: 2181-2040 Famine and conflict from land holding nobles weakened the kingship. Turbulent times and dozens of kings.
Middle Kingdom:2040-1782 Reunification of Egypt through Mentuhotep I. Tombs moved to rock cut cliffs to protect burials. Senusret III. Rise of literature and music. Art reflects a psychological approach to depiction.
Second Intermediate: 1782-1570 Second Golden Age. Egypt expands south into Nubia. Trade and conquests strengthen economics.
New Kingdom : 1570-1070 Valley of the Kings separated tomb and temple. Important Pharaohs such as: Tutmosis II, Hatshepsut, Tutmosis III, Ankhenaton, and Tutankhamun ruled.
Third Intermediate:1070-570. Egypt bankrupt. Assyrian conflicts. Assurnarsipal invaded Thebes.
Late Dynastic: 525-332 Repeated Persian invasions and last continual dynastic Pharoah.
Macedonian Period: 332-30 BC Invasion of Alexander and the Ptolomaic lineage of Cleopatra.Ultimately Rome conquers. Death of Cleopatra and Marc Antony.
