Description
In Unit 7, lesson 2, you were provided with two developmentally appropriate lesson plans that discussed the harmful impacts of substance use.
For this lesson’s discussion, you will need to create an activity or mini-lesson (something that could be completed in 20 minutes or less) that (1) is developmentally appropriate and (2) that identifies and discusses the harmful impacts of drug addiction. Your activity must be detailed and creative. Sharing that you would read a book and tell the children, “Now, don’t do drugs” is not an acceptable submission. If your activity includes an outside resource (a book or clip from the Internet) be sure to provide the URL. Please note:
The activity that you create will be what you submit as your discussion this week.In the last lesson, we watched a video that highlighted a high school in California populated with students who were considered at-risk for a myriad of reasons. Another tragedy impacting our nation, at the present time, is the long-term impact of opioid and substance use. Because of the seriousness of this particular issue, we have set aside an entire lesson to focus on this topic.
Objectives:
The students will be able to:
- Review information on the magnitude of opioid and other substance use.
- Identify the role educators and other school personnel can play in educating students about the adverse effects of opioid and other substance use.
- Explore available resources for teaching students about the consequences of opioid and substance use.
Unit 7, Lesson 2 Assignments:
- Please watch “A Community Overwhelmed by Opioids“.
- After you have watched the clip, please review the following articles:
Combating the Opioid Crisis and Other Substance Misuse: Schools, Students, Families
Education Policy Responses to the Opioid Crisis
- Many states have implemented resources for educators to identify students impacted by substance use and to educate children and youth to avoid the consequences of harmful addictions. In 2017, the state of Ohio implemented a comprehensive guide for educators and others involved in the strategic development of drug prevention programs in the state. Here’s a copy of that guide.
- Review the following resources:
The Opioid Epidemic: How to Protect Your Family
Kindergarten-Grade 2 Drug Prevention Lesson Plan
Grade 3-Grade 5 Drug Prevention Lesson Plan
- Complete this week’s discussion board assignment. Your initial response is due on Thursday by 11:59pm EST, and your two peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59pm EST.
- Finish and submit your Educational Philosophy Assignment assignment to Canvas and to your Folio. If you have any questions about how to submit items to your Folio, be sure to visit this helpful module.
