Description
Culture is defined as the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. Discussions of culture can range from sculptures and music to food, architecture, and socio-political dynamics.
When the story of the African experience is told, it often does not begin with conversations about culture; it typically gets tied to the horrors of chattel slavery and its resulting social dynamics. However, your textbook does its due diligence in presenting various cultural aspects about the empires and civilizations that governed the continent of Africa prior to the transatlantic slave trade and colonization.
Why do you think culture is removed from the conversation when discussing the early aspects of the African/African-American experience? What was the most interesting cultural information you garnered from this weeks course materials?
