Anxiety and Autism in Children Literature Review

Anxiety and Autism in Children Literature Review

Description

My topic: anxiety and autism in children

(I’ve already found 6 articles, so I’ve done some of the work for you so you do not need to find any further articles, only use the 6 I attach below please!)

  • When you find your articles, start scanning the titles and abstracts (but don’t solely rely on them) to identify if an article is relevant/appropriate to your topic. Think about what question or problem the researchers are addressing or what the key concepts are and how they are defined. Think about what the results/findings are in each study. Do they all tell a story?
  • Read the articles and begin to make connections between the sources. Here’s a start to asking good questions about vetting sources: What is the specific thesis, problem, or research question that my literature review aims to define? What type of literature review am I conducting? Am I looking at issues of theory, methodology, policy, quantitative research (e.g. interviews, observations), qualitative research (e.g., studies, surveys, statistics)? What is the scope of my literature review? What types of publications am I using (e.g., journals, books, government documents)? What discipline am I working in (e.g. Public Health, Nursing, Kinesiology etc.)? Has my search for sources been wide enough to ensure that I have found all the relevant material? Has it been narrow enough to exclude irrelevant material? Is the number of sources I’ve used appropriate for the length of my paper (i.e. if your literature review is part of a larger paper or assignment)? Have I critically analyzed the resources I found? How will I avoid just listing and summarizing resources? Do I assess them, discussing strengths and weaknesses? Have I cited and discussed studies contrary to my perspective? Will the reader find my literature review relevant, appropriate, and or useful?
  • Structure your literature review to highlight the current knowledge in the field.
  • Organize your literature according to a central theme. For example, researchers provide evidence to suggest that mindfulness practice reduces psychological stress and increases perceived coping mechanisms among mothers of young children with ASD.
  • Draft an outline of your paper (this is a key step). Creating a draft will help organize your ideas before you start plugging in the actual words.
  • Aim for approximately 6 pages of WRITTEN WORK. This means do not include the title page and the reference page in your 6 pages of text and must all be APA new 7th edition format!
  • Write the review with these sections in mind: a) Introduction, b) Main Body, and c) Concluding Statement. The introduction highlights the scope and importance of your topic. The main body summarizes and synthesizes the scientific literature from the six articles. Here’s a great piece on synthesizing: What is Synthesis? Synthesis writing is a form of analysis related to comparison and contrast, classification and division. On a basic level, synthesis requires the writer to pull together two or more summaries, looking for themes in each text. In synthesis, you search for the links between various materials in order to make your point. Most advanced academic writing, including literature reviews, relies heavily on synthesis.
  • Literature reviews synthesize large amounts of information and present it in a coherent, organized fashion. In a literature review you will be combining material from several texts to create a new text – your literature review. You will use common points among the sources you have gathered to help you synthesize the material. This will help ensure that your literature review is organized by subtopic, not by source. This means various authors’ names can appear and reappear throughout the literature review, and each paragraph will mention several different authors. When you shift from writing summaries of the content of a source to synthesizing content from sources, there is a number things you must keep in mind:
    • Look for specific connections and or links between your sources and how those relate to your thesis or question.
    • When writing and organizing your literature review be aware that your readers need to understand how and why the information from the different sources overlap.
    • Organize your literature review by the themes you find within your sources or themes you have identified.
  • Do not use direct quotes in your review. Paraphrase. Here are two excellent resource to get you started: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/using_research/quoting_paraphrasing_and_summarizing/paraphrasing.html and this YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SObGEcok06U
  • Do not regurgitate information or list the findings of each study one after another. Integrating the findings is key to a well-developed review.
  • Edit your paper. In writing, the first rule is that your first draft should never be your final draft.
  • Use APA formatting to cite your in-text citations.
  • Use APA guidelines for the title page. Give your paper a title that reflects the topic. https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/paper-format/student-annotated.pdf
  • Use APA guidelines for the reference page. The reference page is called Reference Page and not Works Cited. https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/paper-format/student-annotated.pdf
  • Do a final read through before submitting. Your paper will go through Turnitin.com so be sure you have understood the guidelines on plagiarism. If your www.turnitin.com originality report is over 35%, you will be given an “F’ for the assignment and will be referred to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs. Tips to keep your originality score low:
    • Stay clear from papers you have written for other classes. You cannot copy and paste some parts of your own paper into this one (that is called self-plagiarism and is not tolerated). Do not copy and paste from scholarly articles into your paper. Do not use direct quotes.
    • Paraphrase!!! Submit the paper ahead of time so you can check your originality report and make changes if necessary.

For example, what are researchers saying about mindfulness/meditation interventions in helping parents of children with ASD?
