1) Mass shootings have become an increasing concern among American criminologists. Read Mass Shootings in America: Moving Beyond Newtown and analyze the myths versus reality of what we know to be true about this particular type of violent criminal behavior. What prevention techniques might be effective for potential mass shooters?

2) Write a 100-word response to each student in first person as if you were writing it to the students. Talk about how you agree with their ideas and add your own thoughts. Make sure it’s respectful.
Student1) The passage in the article that made my hair stand up was, ” Mass murder just may be a price we must pay for living in a society where personal freedom is so highly valued.” The reason why it made my hair stand is that I highly disagree because we can fix this. Yes, we don’t want to mess with the second amendment taking away people’s guns but we want to make sure that people are qualified to obtain that gun. Correct me if I am wrong class but the process of getting a gun is to fill out a background check, wait for 30-second approval, and pay the fee. Many states might have different rules but I see this as an opportunity to strengthen the application process. However, the passage does say the guns can still make their way into the streets but it also does say that mass shooters have purchased or stolen their guns for family/friends. There has to be a fine line of people educating gun laws and how to safely use their guns. If we look at the problem itself “Between 1982 and May 2021, 66 out of the 124 mass shootings in the United States were carried out by white shooters.” From the studies of the offenders they are not deemed to be mentally ill so how else would we describe their actions for taking innocent lives?
